Ela Alpman

An interview with the new Director of the International Piano Competition Istanbul – Orchestra’Sion

You have just been appointed Director of the International Piano Competition Istanbul – Orchestra’Sion, following the departure of Emmanuelle Beaufils. Could you introduce yourself and tell us a little more about yourself so that our members can get to know you better?

I trained as a musicologist. I learned to play the violin and then studied at the University of Strasbourg and at the Mimar Sinan Conservatory in Istanbul, where I obtained my Master's degree in musicology.

I taught music history at various music schools in Istanbul for nine years. Four years ago, I was appointed music teacher at the Lycée Dame-de-Sion. Recently, I agreed to take on the role of concert hall coordinator at the school. Throughout the year, we organize concerts that are open to the public and invite Turkish and foreign artists to perform. With this role came the position of Director of the Piano Competition. However, I continue to teach music classes.

I have also written articles and books on musicology: in particular, I collaborated on a comparative musicology research project based on the first phonograph recordings made in the field within the boundaries of today's Turkey.

What is your experience of the Competition?

In recent years, I have accompanied the High School Students' Jury as coordinator. I am particularly enthusiastic about this program. The High School Student Jury is made up of high school students of all ages and levels who have a good background in music and piano and who also award prizes at each edition. This experience enriches them, as they get to talk to the candidates, the professional members of the Competition Jury, and the members of Orchestra'Sion, which is the orchestra that accompanies the finalists.

Music seems to be particularly important at your school.

We are trying to develop new musical projects within the school. Last year, we carried out a special baroque music project with French musicians and our students, which we are repeating this year with a production of Dido and Aeneas.

In addition, we also invite our jurors to perform on stage at other times of the year, as was the case with Anna Geniushene and Lucas Geniusas, as well as Turkish pianists Toros Can and Gülsin Onay, and we invite them to give masterclasses to students at the conservatories.

It should also be noted that the finalists of the Piano Competition are generally always invited to play at the Lycée the year after they win their prize. Developing educational projects for our students in collaboration with our prize winners is one of our objectives.

For the winners, we would like to continue seeking partnerships so that they can perform and share their talent. This year, they are invited to perform at festivals in Turkey, such as the Glümüsluk International Classical Music Festival, or abroad, particularly in France, such as the Lisztomanias Festival in Châteauroux or the Théâtre Saint-Bonnet in Bourges.

2024 Finals: Laureates and Jury members of the 6th International Piano Competition Orchestra'Sion

The International Piano Competition Istanbul - Orchestra’Sion took place for the first time in spring in 2024, whereas previously it had been held in fall. Will you change the timing again?

Well yes, our seventh competition will take place between November 14 and 19, 2026, at least that is the current plan. However, since it is organized within the Lycée, this may still change, according to school schedules. The Lycée auditorium can only be used during school vacations since the competitions’ pre-final rounds take place in this room. Only the Final takes place in the large concert hall, the Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall, which is located very close.

I will shortly start to organize the candidates’ selections, but we already have secured the Jury members. They will be led by Jean-Yves Clément, a famous French writer, editor, and festival organizer. As this will be my first competition as Director, I will be able to give you more news and information after the next edition. In the meantime, I very much hope to be able to attend the next General Assembly in Vilnius in June 2026.

Yes, we are also delighted because it would be the perfect place to meet other WFIMC members and exchange experiences and different points of view on organizing a competition. In the meantime, we wish you all the best as you settle into your new role.
