Two weeks after the WFIMC General Assembly, Harbin hosted the Schoenfeld International String Competition: Two weeks, three disciplines, and a great enthusiasm among participants, juries, and audiences

A prime destination for Chinese tourists, Harbin has raised its international profile once again this year with a spectacular Ice and snow festival, with the 2025 Asian Games, the Harbin Summer Music Festival, the General Assembly of the WFIMC, the 20th World Saxophone Congress, the Harbin International Accordion Art Week and finally the 2025 Schoenfeld Intl. String Competition. Held at the Harbin Grand Theatre, the Conservatory of Music, and Harbin Concert Hall, the competition has gained great visibility in recent years and ranks among the top competitions in Asia. “We´ve had a wonderful time in Harbin, and I am so impressed- this competition has become highly professional, the level is outstanding, and the organisation is perfect!” says Arto Noras, Jury Chair.

This year, Harbin Modern Culture & Tourism Investment Group Co., Ltd. was appointed to be "sponsor partner of the Schoenfeld International String Competition 2025", and this generous support was key to continuing the artistic and operational standard of the competition, despite the city and entire country having to face hardships from the global economic environment.

Remembering the legacy of the late Alice and Eleonore Schoenfeld, the competition was brought to Harbin by its President and Artistic Director, Suli Xue, a student of Alice Schoenfeld and a former member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. At the official award ceremony at Harbin´s spectacular Grand Theatre, WFIMC Secretary General Florian Riem reminded the audience of the iconic sisters: “Tonight, as we celebrate outstanding young artists, we also celebrate the city of Harbin, a city with multiple cultural origins, influences and a fascinating history. Its sheer diversity, plurality and cultural richness make it a true city of music, and no one else could be a better icon, could be more symbolic for it, than the two sisters Alice and Eleanor Schoenfeld. Born in Yugoslavia of parents from Ukraine and Poland, the sisters grew up in Germany, made their career in America, and embraced China more than any other country to help the careers of countless young artists.”
