The Paganini Legacy Continues

17-year old Aozhe Zhang wins the Premio Paganini International Violin Competition

Open to international violinists aged from 15 to 30, the 2025 Premio Paganini international Violin Competition in Italy has awarded its First Prize to Aozhe Zhang (*2008) from Heifei, China.
As part of his win, Zhang will receive a series of concert engagements with top theaters and musical institutions worldwide, and the opportunity to record a studio recital album with the Platoon label, presented by its co-founder and CEO, Denzyl Feigelson. Zhang was also awarded the competition’s Fondazione Pallavicino Prize with €3,000 for the best performance of a Paganini Violin Concerto. “We heard young musicians of exceptional calibre. The choice was not easy, but Aozhe Zhang showed remarkable talent across the complex articulation of the various stages,” concluded Jury President Uto Ughi. “I wish him every success — he now has before him an important journey that could not have begun in a better way:

Second place went to the Japanese violinist Rino Yoshimoto (born in Kobe in 2003), and the Third Prize was awarded to Kim Hyun Seo (born 2010 in Seoul), who was the youngest finalist at age 15.

Aozhe Zhang

Aozhe Zhang is a student at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music’s affiliated middle school. Training since age four, he has performed all of Paganini’s 24 Caprices at just 14 and has since collaborated with major orchestras like the Shanghai and Guangzhou Symphony Orchestras. His exceptional talent was confirmed by major awards: in 2023, he was the youngest-ever winner of China's Golden Bell Award, and in 2024, he won First prize and two special prizes at Italy's Rodolfo Lipizer Prize competition, further cementing his international reputation.

Founded in 1954, the International Violin Competition "Premio Paganini" was established to grant Genoa global prestige while discovering exceptional young talent. It has since become one of the world's most prestigious competitions, serving as a decisive springboard for legendary artists like Salvatore Accardo, Gidon Kremer, and Leonidas Kavakos. In 2022, marking Paganini’s 240th birthday, the Competition was relaunched under the motto "renew, preserving." This ambitious project upholds its supreme artistic standards while innovating in format and outreach to engage new, wider audiences and strengthen Genoa's cultural legacy at home and abroad.
