Grand Finale at the Viotti

The Gian Battista Viotti international Music Competition for Opera Singing announces its winners

The winner of the 75th Viotti International Music Competition is baritone Jiazhou Wang. The final act of the Vercelli music competition took place on Saturday, October 18th, with the Orchestra dell’Accademia del Teatro alla Scala conducted by Francesco Ommassini.

“The level of the competitors was extremely high. It was a great pleasure to be part of the Competition and to share this challenging commitment with my distinguished colleagues,” stated Jury Chairman Peter Theiler.

The final took place on the evening of Saturday, October  18th, at the Teatro Civico in Vercelli, with the participation of the Orchestra of the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala di Milano, conducted by Maestro Francesco Ommassini. 

The program proposed in the final—two arias for each candidate—represented a compendium of European opera music with pieces from works by Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi, Mascagni, Puccini, and Bizet.

The award ceremony involved illustrious institutional figures and representatives: the first prize was presented by the Mayor of Vercelli, Avv. Roberto Scheda.

Mezzo-soprano Rongna Su placed second and baritone Junyoung Choi placed third. Also participating in the final were soprano Gaja Napast,  baritone Tamon Inoue, soprano Francesca Lo Verso, soprano Jihye Jang, and bass Jawoung Lee.

The baritone JiaZhou Wang, a third-year undergraduate student at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, was selected as an official member of the Accademia Rossiniana of the Rossini Opera Festival in 2025. At just 20 years old, he performed a leading role in Il viaggio a Reims at the prestigious festival. He has performed roles such as the Marchese d’Obigny in La traviata and has participated in various “Opera Galas,” interpreting characters like Ford, Marcello, Guglielmo, and Don Giovanni.
