‘Franz Schubert and Modern Music’ competition

10 Lied Duos and 9 Piano Trios travelled to Graz and competed against each other in the semi-finals of the 11th International Competition “Franz Schubert and Modern Music” (FS&MM) on July 21 & 22. On July 23rd, 2022, the prizewinning ensembles were chosen among 4 Lied Duos and 5 Piano Trios.

After pandemic-related postponements, a pre-selection in autumn 2021, and an online round in February 2022, the final rounds of the 11th International Competition "Franz Schubert and Modern Music" took place at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz from July 21st to 23rd, 2022.

A total of 249 musicians from 40 nations applied to participate. In the Lied Duo category, 36 duos out of 75 entries were admitted to the first round, and 12 duos advanced to the semifinals. In the Piano Trio category, 24 trios were admitted to the first round from 33 entries, and 9 trios competed in the semifinals.

New Category from 2025

The next and 12th edition of the International Competition "Franz Schubert and Modern Music" (FS&MM) will take place in 2025 and will be held in three different categories. Piano Trio and Lied Duo will be joined by Piano Duo as a new category. The Piano Duo Silver-Garburg will be artistically in charge - they hold a professorship for piano duo at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. This new category reflects Franz Schubert's special love for this instrumentation, and participants will have 8 hours of repertoire from which to choose! Piano Duo is intended enrich the competition "Franz Schubert and Modern Music" and to underline its uniqueness.

Anniversary Edition 2028

Franz Schubert died at the age of 31 on November 19th, 1828, and the 13thedition of the "Franz Schubert and Modern Music" competition will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the composer's death in 2028

The Competition is organized by the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria.
