Meet the Winners of Trondheim's Princess Astrid Competition

Due to the stringent entry regulations and quarantine in Norway (the country will open for general travellers only on 26 November!), the Princess Astrid International Music Competition decided to change their 2021 edition, giving up two live rounds in Trondheim and instead hold only one, comprehensive online semi-final round for nine candidates, selected from 180 applicants from all around the world.

All the more exciting was the live final with Trondheim Symfonieorkester under conductor Gregor Buehl. Among the three finalists, the Japanese violinist Yukari Ohno convinced most with her outstanding interpretation of Prokofiev and Brahms.

Ohno (born 1995 in Japan) graduated with top marks from the violin class of Toho Gakuen High School of Music and completed a soloist diploma at Toho Gakuen with Akiko Tatsumi before moving to Vienna in order to study with Boris Kuschnir at the University of Music and Arts. She has performed at the Radiokulturhaus, Musikverein, Muth and other Vienna venues.

Yukari Ohno will receive 160 000 NOK (approximately 15 000 €), a solo engagement with the Trondheim Symfonieorkester, a recital in Bergen in cooperation with the International Edvard Grieg Competition, and career consulting with Andrew Ousley (Unison Media).
