The IPEA international Percussion Competition at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music announces its 2025 winners

The Final of the 8th IPEA International Percussion Competition took place at the He Luting Concert Hall and the Shangyin Opera House of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, featuring both solo and concerto performances.

Outstanding percussionists and distinguished jury members from around the world gathered to celebrate rhythm and music. The competition has attracted countless percussion professionals and enthusiasts worldwide, further promoting international exchange and dialogue in percussion art.

The three selected finalists, Gabriel Michaud, Shilin Li and Miguel Traquina, played the "Pacific Concerto" for percussion solo and symphony orchestra, commissioned from renowned percussionist and composer Professor Emmanuel Séjourné, as well as "In Songs and Clamour", a percussion concerto for solo percussionist and orchestra, commissioned from Ye Shen of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

Both concertos were performed with the Shanghai Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Associate Professor Ke Zhou.

Gabriel Michaud, First Prize winner

Gabriel Michaud studied percussion from age 11, jazz (vibraphone, drums, piano), and classical piano at the Nantes Conservatory then at the Haute Ecole de Musigue de Genève, focusing on contemporary/orchestral repertoire, drums, tablas, and composition. Since September 2023, he is a Master's student in percussion at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (CNSMDP).
